February 16, 2017
Today we said good-bye to a family member and amazing horse, our beloved Duke. Duke lived to be 37 years old and truly defined the term "healthy as a horse" up until the end. At age seven, he began working weekends pulling a carriage in downtown Grand Rapids. He retired on July 5, 2014. In that time, Duke celebrated countless weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, bridal showers, parades, bachelorette parties, and gave tours to thousands of people visiting Grand Rapids.
Duke helped Linda of Classic Carriage LLC get her business started and served as a teacher to many new drivers (including Linda, years before he became her horse). While he was like driving a bull sometimes, he was a predictable bull and kept everyone alert. He was a tender-hearted grump with a playful gelding personality. He loved candy canes and potato chips, baths with the pressure washer, sunbathing flat out on his side in the pasture, and mud.
Duke was an exceptional horse and gave 100% all the time. We knew this day would come, but his loss leaves us all with a heavy heart. Rest in peace, friend.
